A 22-year-old girl and a 19-year-old girl were gang-raped and murdered last Tuesday, sparking protests across India.
The arrests come as Gandhi and his two brothers were on their way to Hathras to meet the families of the victims of the gang rape, ignoring the ban on large gatherings.
They were stopped by police on the highway between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, and Rahul Gandhi reportedly engaged in an argument over the basis on which he would be arrested.
